![]() ![]() In my two weeks there, I saw a total of three men that came anywhere close to the endomorphic male that Gengorah Tagame venerates in his art (see below). Part of the reason is that there simply aren't very many bears in Japan. The other had moved, and after tracking down its new address, we stopped by before it opened to check to see if it was actually at that address, ran into its owner/manager (with our Tokyo guide, who was able to ask questions and translate for us), and the manager confessed that the bar wasn't attracting much in the way of bears these days. When we got to Tokyo, we had the names and addresses of a couple of gay bear bars. There's a "Bear Club of Japan" website, and I wrote them several times, but never got any response. Much of the hard-to-find information out there is both spotty and out of date. There are a lot of websites about Japanese culture, and a good number of travel sites, but very few sites for gay visitors to Japan, much less any with comprehensive directories or events listings. 21: In Search of the Tokyo Bear Bar: A Story With Not Much in the Way of Pictures
